In the Eastern Christian tradition, in common with many other Wisdom Paths, the role of the "Spiritual Director" (or better yet, the "staretz," a spiritual elder or guide) is to be transparent to the action of the Holy Spirit ... that is, not so much to "direct," as to allow the person to more clearly see how the Spirit is acting in their lives and leading them. He or she is also an experienced professional spiritual practitioner who can be a touchstone or sounding board for the individual's spiritual journey.
